More Book Talks!!
Hello Room 75!
Today was a wonderful day filled with many book talks about many different books that we are reading. Yesterday I was not able to post a picture of Bruce with his book project, so to recap:
Bruce did his presentation on Tornadoes!
Today we started with listening to Ethan sharing his non-fiction book "One Day Around the World in 24 Hours." We could tell that Ethan had practiced at home with his family as he shared what he wrote on his poster with confidence. He got the audience even more interested in what was on the poster when he asked if the kids could try to identify each of the four flags that he drew! Way to go Ethan!
After Ethan, we listened to Lauren share her book project. She did her project on zebras and their closest relatives, horses. She used two books, "Little Horses" and "Little Zebras" to help her with this project. She chose to focus on the many similarities and differences between these animals for her project. Lauren used actual props to help us recognize what animal she was talking about. Excellent work!
Ben was next as he shared his project on one of his favorite books, "Percy Jackson 2- Sea of Monsters" By Rick Riordan. He typed up his project and was proud to present his project from "memory". He recommends this book to kids who like to read Harry Potter Books or action books. Way to go Ben!
After lunch Ria shared her project on the book "Ivy and Bean" by Annie Barrows. She created her very own book out of cardboard! Each page included information on different areas, such as who's who in her book, the setting and a summary. She also added her own illustrations to for the kids to look at! When talking about the main characters she made a connection to herself stating "she is a tomboy, kind of like me." Super work Ria!!
Kareem was very excited to share his book talk on the picture book "Zathura" By Chris Van Allsburg. He did a great job of talking about the different characters that were important in the story. He was proud to show his illustrations of the robots that he included on the poster! One of the compliments his friends gave him was that she could tell that he had practiced at home! Way to go Kareem!!
Cassie chose to do her book talk on "Ride Fly Guy Ride!" She looked very proud as she talked about the main characters of her book. She showed us on her beautiful drawing as she was sharing her summary of the story. After being asked what her favorite part was that she drew, she answered, "The plane, because I have been on a plane!" Great connection to self Cassie! Way to go!!
Amazing work room 75!! After you present your projects I am putting them up in the hallway so that other students can check them out and see what good books there are for them to read!!
If you can believe it, we also were able to work on other things today!
We had an assembly today that was MC's by two Peace Ambassadors, (One of whom was Marek!). One of the videos we watched at the assembly starred one of our classmates as well (Mykayla!). Ask your children to share with you what the assembly was about. (PS the hint is that it was about two things to be especially safe about. Ask them to share with you what they learned from one or both of the videos.
1. what to do if you get to school and the doors on the compound are already locked.
2. how to cross AT the crosswalk safely!)
In math we are continuing with our exploration of large numbers with a specific focus on "Place Value", "Standard Form", "Expanded Form".
Important information:
Book projects are due this week, if you have not handed yours in make sure to work on it tonight because tomorrow night it is HALLOWEEN HOWLER.
Bring your costumes to school on Thursday to change into for the afternoon.
Bring board games you would like to play with at school with your friends on Thursday (with parent permission first)
FUN LUNCH THURSDAY! we need a parent volunteer to help out in room 75 on Thursday. If you can volunteer, it would be from 1130-1230 (you can bring your kids). If you can volunteer please email kdhunter99@yahoo.ca

Let the Book Presentations Begin!!
Hello Room 75!
We are off to a wonderful start with so many students having brought in their book projects today! Each morning this week, we will be listening to one or two of them right after gym and then again after lunch!
Today we listened as students talked about 2 fiction stories, an autobiography and a non-fiction book.
Brooke shared her story by Judy Blume called, "Going, Going, Gone! With the Pain and the Great One!" She did a wonderful job of adding expression as she spoke and shared her descriptions of the 2 main characters: "The Great One", and her favorite, "The Pain!"
Bruce shared his non-fiction book on Tornadoes and was comfortable and confident in his knowledge and understandings of where most tornadoes occur and what causes them to happen.
Ally was VERY excited to share the autobiography she read, "Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl." She did a wonderful job demonstrating her understandings of what it was like to be a young girl during World War 2 who with her family had to hide for fear of being caught. She was also very proud to share pictures that were taken of her when she visited Anne Franks' actual home with her family.
Bailey was confident as she shared her homemade book based on Gardians of Ga'Hoole, The Capture that she read. She spent a great deal of time preparing her book, which included a variety of different mediums, such as writing, illustrations, a mini-book within her book, and some 3d objects. Her project included a detailed summary of the story, without revealing the ending, and good descriptions of some of the many characters who were important in the story.

Things to keep track of for the upcoming week.
Hello room 75!
We are about to start a short and busy week at school.
A few reminders to keep track of.
This week your book projects are due. Please make sure that you have been working on them with your family and that you bring them in this week so that you can share them with the class. Each day we will have a few students share their projects with the class.
On Thursday we will be celebrating Halloween as a class and as part of the school. As mentioned on Friday, we will have a Halloween parade in the afternoon (2pm). We are asking that you bring your costumes to school and then change into them after lunch. That way you can participate in gym and outdoor recess without worrying too much about your costume. If part of your costume requires you to do it at home, such as your parents painting your face, you can do so at home, and then change into the rest of your costume at lunch. Thursday is also FUN LUNCH.
For our celebration, I do have a short video that we can watch which will allow us time to play games with each other. If you have a board game that you enjoy playing at home, and are allowed to bring to school, you are welcome to do so. We will have around an hour for games before the parade and then the video.
Also, if you would like to bring snacks to share and eat with the class, we are asking for snacks that are healthy. You will be receiving a great deal of candy from trick or treating, and it would be good to have healthy snacks. If you are interested in bringing goody bags or treats to handout that can be taken home to be eaten, there are 22 students in the class. Please make sure that you bring enough for everyone. As always, we ask that any snacks that are brought in be PEANUT free.
On Monday, we will also be starting to learn to speak FRENCH! All of the grade 3 and 4 students will be learning French this year. We have split the students up into groups and each Monday, they will be learning a different component of French with one of the grade 3/4 teachers. I will be teaching the students about the calendar and the days of the week in French.
I hope that you are enjoying our first snowfall! I wonder if there will be snow on the ground when you go trick or treating on Thursday night?
Important dates:
ALL WEEK book projects are due.
Wednesday, October 30th- Halloween Howler
Thursday, October 31st- Halloween party, parade and video. With permission from your parents, you can choose to bring a favorite board game that you want to play at school with a few friends, and bring some healthy snacks to munch on!

Fundraising forms coming home this week!
Hello room 75
Fundraising forms are coming home today and tomorrow, please make sure to go through your child's communication folder to check for updated information. Here are two messages from the school.
#1.
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Coco Brooks Pizza and Spolumbo’s Sausage Fundraiser information will be sent home by the end of this week. We hope that each child will be able to sell as many pizzas and cases of sausage as possible to make this a great success! As we now have our wonderful playground the next fundraising initiative is to purchase electronic learning aids for our ever growing 21st century school.
This year both Coco Brooks and Spolumbo’s can be ordered online! Coco Brooks will be ordered through their own website at cocobrooks.com and Spolumbo’s will be ordered through our school hot lunch site atCranston.hotlunches.net. Product information on how to order online is attached.
We will accept paper orders BUT would appreciate everyone to take advantage of the online ordering system as it takes many volunteer hours to input all the information into the system for the entire school.
The order forms and product information can also be found on the school website main page atwww.cbe.ab.ca/b408 or click on below links.

We finished reading our second chapter book!
Hello room 75!
I love when we finish reading a book and are able to talk about what was in the book! What our favorite parts were; who are favorite characters are; what it reminds us of; comparing it to other books we may have read; and whether we enjoyed the book. Students share with your parents the book we just finished and what you chose to write about as your response to it!!
This morning, students were quite engaged in math as we used Mathletics. (Remember to make sure that your computer does NOT block cookies). Students worked diligently on their assignments and then were eager to compete against other students in the class and around the world on Live Mathletics!! Most assignments were focused on learning about place value. We talked about what "standard, expanded and written" forms were when writing numbers. Ask your child to share with you what they discussed. This was our first lesson on the subject, so watch as their confidence and understandings of numbers grow over the next little while.
Tomorrow is Music. Mrs. McBride has asked me to remind the class to make sure that they have their precorder and music duotang! If they left it in the class that is fine, if they brought them home, students need to make sure to put them in their backpacks so that they are prepared for their lesson!
Important reminders:
Thursday, October 24th- Picture Retake day!! (really it is Wilson!)
Wednesday, October 30th- Halloween Howler
Friday, November 1st. NO SCHOOL PD DAY
Homework:

Mathletics 15 minutes
Work on your book projects that are due next week. By now your book should be finished and you should have started working on the project part. I can't wait to see them next week. Tomorrow we will discuss the projects a bit more and decide who would like to present on the first day.
Question for the blog:
What have you done so far for your book project? (When answering this question, please include, the name of the book, whether you have finished it, and then what parts you have started to work on).
Have a great evening!
See you tomorrow,

Motivational Magic!
Hello Room 75!
Today we were able to celebrate our fundraising success with the Terry Fox Run (Over $6600!), with a special performance from Steve Harmer and "Motivational Magic". Click on it to go directly to his website to see some of what we got to see! Students were engaged and excited to watch as he spun his fruit punch upside down without spilling a drop!! (Ask your parents what the scientific word is behind the force that kept the fruit punch in the cups!) We also watched him hatch a balloon into a real dove and a cardboard bunny into the read thing!!
In with all the magic, was a key message about how each and everyone of us can be and are heros! Steve defined the word HERO, into four words, each starting with one of the letters in the word. Can you remember what each of the words were? Pss...here is a hint...
H (help others and yourself with your hands and actions)
E (encourage others and yourself with your words)
R (respect and others and yourself with your thoughts)
O (think of others)
Parents share with your child an example of when you were a hero, students share with your parents an example of when you were a hero.
As a class, we came up with two goals that we are going to work on this week as a group.
1. To respect each other by working quietly (especially in art).
2. To use read to self with purpose and intent by reading for 15 minutes in class each day.
Ask your child how he or she was today in regards to the goal and how the class was as a whole.
We have been working a great deal on learning the different spellings and meanings of a variety of homonyms! The flip books the students have been working on have been coming out quite nicely. The main ones we would like to work on are:
their; there; they're
to;too;two
where; wear
witch; which
ate; eight
write; right
hear; here
red;read
as they are coming up a lot in their writing.
At home they should be busy finishing up reading their book (unless it is finished already) for their book project and should be starting to work on the project itself. A good idea is to have the project finished early enough so that your child will have time to practice presenting their work before the big day! Eye contact with the audience and fluency with what they are saying when presenting are key. Again, if you have any questions, please refer to the instruction sheets I emailed out earlier last week, or email me.
Important information;
Picture retake day is ACTUALLY Thursday, October 24th (not today, as I thought, sorry about that Wilson!)
Wednesday, October 30th- Halloween Howler! If you have not ordered tickets yet, please do so ASAP!!

It's Election Day!
Hello room 75!
There is no school Monday, October 21st for a professional day and it is also ELECTION DAY!! Please make sure your parents go out and vote!
Friday was a busy day! We continued our work with Mrs. Ellison to create our large "HOPE TREE". After writing our goals in your IRIS journal and on IRIS we wrote them onto the leaves that will be going up onto our HOPE TREE. We will be discussing and writing more about our goals in the upcoming weeks. And, this week, the students will get to see a mini version of what the larger tree will look like. Each part of the tree will represent different things that will help the students to work towards achieving their goals and hopes they have.
Share with your family the goal you wrote on your leaf. If you have not gotten into IRIS on your computer yet, please try to log in over the long weekend and show your parents how you can write your goals there.
We also had Mrs. Goldberg's class join us after dance for a round of daily five. Students were able to work with different students on their literacy activities, such as buddy reading and writing, and playing different literacy games. Ask your child to share with you what they chose to do to help strengthen their reading and writing skills.
By now the students should be close to finishing the book they are going to presenting for their book project. Please email me if you have any specific questions.
Important reminders:
If you would like to order HALLOWEEN Howler Tickets and have not done so yet, please send in the monday and form ASAP.

What is your goal?
Hello room 75.
It was great to be back and to see everyone again!
What a busy day!
In gym we worked to strengthen our understanding of what "TEAMWORK" is and means. Working in groups of 5 and then 3, we each worked as part of a team to compete in a relay. This was teamwork, because we each had to work together in order to be successful. The student hitting and passing the ball had to take his or her time to ensure an accurate pass, the student catching the ball had to pay attention to what was happening in order to catch the ball or collect it if it got away from them. Ask your child who was on their 5 person team and then on their 3 person team.
In math we worked on strengthening our understanding of growing and shrinking patterns.
In writing, we worked on a variety of things. The students worked to finish their in school book review using the IPADS to type up their work, before adding it to their brochures!
We also had a lesson on HOMONYMS! Many students have been writing, and are getting, words such as write/right; to/too/two; whole/hole mixed up. We used the SMARTBOARD to play a game that introduced the different words, then the kids had to create sentences using each of the words before they could move them on the SMARTBOARD. In the afternoon, they created their own sentences in a flip book, using many of the different homonyms they are learning, before illustrating their work. Ask your child to share with you a homonym they learned, and see if they are able to spell them correctly. Share a homonym that you know with your child.
We also worked on writing a new goal that we are working on in school. The students wrote their goal and their strategy in the IRIS journal. They are encouraged to try and type their goal into IRIS tonight. IRIS Click on this link to get you to IRIS. You cannot google Iris, and if you are typing in the website, you cannot type www before hand. It needs to just be: https://iris.portal.cbe.ab.ca/
The students were shown how to log into IRIS and where to write their goal in. We will be working with these goals tomorrow, so it is important that they bring their IRIS journals back to school. In order for the student to log in, they will need their id number and password. This should be written in their journals unless they chose not to because they know their ID. Their password is the last 4 digits of their ID number.
They wrote their goal and strategy using this prompt.
My goal is ....... because.......
I will do this by.......... and ..........
Please help your child to log into IRIS tonight.

Have a Great Long Weekend!!
Hello!
We had a quick and busy day today!
We started the morning with sharing the blog and discussing what many of us did Thursday night, including attending Family Science Night at the school. Thanks to the families who attended. The students were very excited to share about the different things they learned and discovered through the many different experiments and hands on learning they experienced at APEGA. Many kids were eager to share how they learned just how strong eggs can actually be, and were surprised by how many textbooks could be balanced on top of the eggs!
We finished our Poetic Art Project today!! Students have been working hard on writing, painting and glueing their project together and they have come out quite well!! They should feel proud of their hard work. One of the flowers they created include words that describe their characteristics, the other flower has petals that describe things that they are good at.
Here is a snapshot of one of the pieces. The rest will be up on Tuesday for everyone to see!!
In dance, they learned the final moves to the dance they have been working on. Ask them to share what they can remember of the choreographed dance they have been working on.
I will be away on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the students have had their guest teacher work with them before. Her name is Mrs. Hofer. I spoke with the class about expectations around behaviour, listening and working for a guest teacher. If you could review the importance in listening and participating in class and what is needs to look like when we have a guest teacher that will be very helpful.
I hope that everyone has a wonderful long weekend with their families!
Important reminders:
No School Monday, October 14th- Thanksgiving!

HALLOWEEN HOWLER TICKETS WENT HOME TODAY!!
Hello families!!!
Please look in your child's home communication folder as there are many important items that are in there!
The Halloween Howler tickets are on sale! Please read the form carefully and if you are interested in attending, please fill in and return with the exact amount ASAP, as the tickets are FIRST COME FIRST SERVED.
The dance is Wednesday, October 30th (not the 31st, as I had in the October calendar, sorry about that)... This way, the kids can go to the dance on Wednesday AND trick or treat on Thursday!
Individual Pictures went home today!! Please look them over and if you are interested in ordering copies please submit everything by October 22. Photo retake day has been rescheduled for October 22nd.
Here is my picture from that day... I will look around my house for my grade 3 or 4 picture and try to have it up by photo retake day (my mom kept most of my school pictures!!)
A notice went home about a fundraising opportunity for the school as well.
During math Mr. Southworth joined us as we went on Mathletics. Each student has been assigned two tasks to work on this week. Each student was able to successfully log in and work in Mathletics. They worked on the tasks and then explored some of the options that are on the side of the screen, they particularly enjoy "Live Mathletics" where they get to compete against other kids from around the world (and even from around the classroom) on basic facts. This is a great way to help your child to strengthen their basic facts. As they master level 1, encourage them to compete at level 2 or 3 to keep things challenging for them.
This afternoon was our last day of Aussie X! The students enjoyed the opportunity to experience a new and different sport (and to finish their lessons that were started but interrupted by the flood in June). Ask them to share with you something they learned about Aussie-X.
Homework:
Parents:
Halloween Howler ticket order forms ASAP
Picture orders due October 22
Fun Lunch orders due October 14 (online)

Last day with Gail Bartel...
Hi room 75...
We had our final lesson with Gail today. Our final project is a large mystery mural where each student is working on their own piece, unaware of what the large end product will be. Once all the pieces are finished we will work to put it together and see what we created!
We shared our patterns that we wrote on the blog with the class, then we worked to create increasing(growing) and repeating patterns and found different friends to share with to see if they could figure out what our pattern rule was in order to add onto our pattern. Ask your child to share with you one of their patterns.
Students have started to work on their book reviews about the book they are reading at school during Daily 5. So far we are working on, the title, who's who in the story, and what is my favorite part? Ask your child what book they are writing about! (These are different then the ones they will be working on at home.)
Tomorrow we will be having our second AussieX session! Hopefully the weather will change and be nice enough to go outside:)...Or perhaps we will see more of this wet stuff coming down?!
As the weather is changing throughout the day, please make sure that your child is coming to school prepared for these changes. Every child should be coming to school with a jacket. We also would like each child to have a water bottle so that they can drink water throughout the day. We are asking that students do NOT come to school with juice, but bring water instead.
I am currently sitting in a staff meeting where we are working on setting up Mathletics. Please use the class website and go to Mathletics and try to login in. Once you are in, you will see that there are some tasks assigned to you. If you try to login in but you cannot get into, perhaps your computer needs to be refreshed, or perhaps you could check in and "Allow Pop-Ups"; or you may need to update Flash; or allow for cookies or don't block cookies.
Reminders:
Hand in any remaining pledge forms and donations for Terry Fox Run.
Fun Lunch Forms are due on October 14th- Order online
Thursday night is FAMILY SCIENCE NIGHT!! at the school from 6-8.
Homework:
Students: Read 15-30 minutes;
Go onto Mathletics and work on one of the assignments for 15-30 minutes.

Beautiful day for Aussie X!
Hello!
As it was so incredibly warm this afternoon students in room 75 participated in Aussie X outside!! They learned all about the footy, and how to control it when bouncing, kicking and passing the ball. Ask your child to share with you what they learned and enjoyed the most about Aussie X.
Yearbooks went home today. If you ordered a yearbook last year, they were sent out today. If you did order one but did NOT receive one, please email me and let me know.
In math we continued our exploration of patterns. We worked to strengthen our understanding of what a repeating or an increasing (growing) pattern was when using numbers. Students also learned that the core of the repeating pattern is the smallest part that repeats.
EG:
12, 23, 14, 18, 12, 23, 14, 18, 12, 23, 14, 18, ...
(the core would be 12 23 14 18) and this is an example of a REPEATING pattern.
A growing (increasing) patterns are when the numbers get bigger in a predictable way.
EG:
1, 2, 4, 8:
pattern is start at 1, then +1, +2, +4, +8, +16...
so the pattern, if we were to add to it would be
1,2,4,8,16,32,64.
The pattern rule is: Start at 1. Each time you add the number to itself.
Always remember when explaining what your pattern rule is to say what number you are starting your pattern with.
In writing, we wrote about what we did on the weekend, as so many students had many stories to share. As we learned from Gooney Bird Greene, we have many absolutely true stories to tell, and they were eager to come up with different titles for their stories about their weekend. We are exploring how to write about personal experiences as stories instead of just listing the different things we may have done. Ask your child to share with you the title of their absolutely true story from the weekend.
We also spent a great deal talking about the book projects that are due the last week of October. An information sheet will go home on Wednesday to parents to let you know the specifics of what is expected for their book project that they are working on at home. In class we will be working as a class on creating a book review about the story we just finished, "Gooney Bird Greene", and students will also be working on writing their own book review on a book they are reading in class.
Reminders:
We will be having library each week on Mondays, if your child did not get to change their book today, as soon as they return it, we will find a time for them to go and select a new one.
Tuesday is our LAST session with the resident artist Mrs. Gail Bartel
Wednesday is Aussie X.
Thursday night is SCIENCE NIGHT! at Cranston School 6:00-8:00pm.
Friday is DANCE!
(If you have any more Scholastic book orders, please hand them in ASAP, I will be putting the order in on Wednesday.)
Homework:
Read 15-30 minutes and record on the reading log.
Share with your parents two parts that are important to include in your book project.
Question for the blog:
What is an example of an increasing (growing pattern) or a repeating pattern? Write the pattern on the blog and write the pattern rule on a piece of paper and bring the Pattern Rule to school tomorrow so that we can share and solve it together.
My pattern is:
1, 2, 4, 7, 11, 16, ... What is my pattern rule? (you don't need to solve this one we will share it tomorrow in class, I just wanted to post a pattern as well as you guys!)
See you tomorrow,
Ms Handelsman

Aussie X begins this week!
Hello!
I hope that the weekend has been enjoyable and restful for everyone of you!
This is going to be a busy week with finishing up with our Artist In Residency, Gail Bartel, participating in Aussie X and APEGGA Science Family night on Thursday (6-8)!
On Friday, we had a special guest visit us:) A former student from room 3 last year! Ask your child to share with you who popped by to say hi and to answer many questions about her new school!
We have just finished up reading "Gooney Bird Greene" and Goony explained to the class that everyone has absolutely totally true stories to tell about themselves. Lucas shared with us his absolutely true story that he called "How Lucas got his name!" This week we will be working to discover the many different absolutely true stories we each have about ourselves and deciding which ones to write a short story about.
Important reminders:
Scholastic Book Orders due MONDAY.
APEGGA Science Night, Thursday 6-8.
Aussie X Monday and Wednesday.

Inclusion Hero!!
Hello room 75 families!
For our class meeting today we talked about what it means to create a sense of belonging and how we can be "Inclusion Heros" in the classroom and on the playground. We discussed what it meant, and one student said to make sure that everyone had someone to play with on the playground. We role played different scenarios where students were either playing a game and asked a student to join them or was a student who wanted to join in. We talked about what feelings a friend might have when asking to join in. Some kids replied, "happy, excited, or nervous.""Nervous because they might say no." We also talked about how sometimes you may need to say no for specific reason, but that it is important to explain why so that the student understands. Students then put themselves into groups of four to create their own scenarios. We ran out of time before we could share these with the class. (Monday's meeting we will share). Ask your child who was in their group and what their scenario was.
In the afternoon we spent time discussing IRIS, and thinking about what goals we had either at school or at home. One student's goal is to read 40 books by the end of the school. He said he had this goal because he really likes to read and to achieve it he was going to read for at least 20 minutes a day! Ask your child:
What is your goal?
Why is this your goal?
How are you going to achieve this goal?
Tomorrow we will be working with Gail Bartel to continue our work on Landscapes.
Important information.
Please be sure to send your child to school with a water bottle so that they can drink water throughout the day, with less visits to the water fountain to do so.
Scholastic book order forms went home. THEY ARE DUE MONDAY, OCTOBER 7TH.
FAMILY PORTRAIT NIGHT FORMS WENT HOME BUT THE TIME WASN'T WRITTEN. IT IS FROM 5-830.
October's reading log did go home today. If your child doesn't have one, that is because it fell out of their communication folder. (I found some on the floor after they had left.) If this is the case please ask your child to ask for one tomorrow.
Homework:
Parents:
Scholastic book orders (if interested)
Terry Fox pledge forms
Fun Lunch Orders, if you are participating, have to be done online.
Students:
Read for 15-30 minutes and record on the reading log.
Tell your parents what your goal is that you wrote about today at school.
Question for the Blog:
In the book you are currently reading, who is your favorite character and why?
See you tomorrow!

The First Pass is Important!
Hello families.
In PE today, we learned the importance behind the first pass. It is how we pass to our friends that ensures their success. As a peaceful member of our school community it is important that we each work towards our own success and help others to achieve theirs. Using beach balls, students were working on control and aim when passing to their partner so that they could either, head, kick or knee the ball back. We learned that the first pass is important because it allows for our partner to be successful in their attempts to accomplish their goal. Some kids thought it was funny to throw the ball directly at the student, instead of aiming it high to allow for them to get their head, knee or foot under the ball. After practicing, more students began to realize that the key to everyone being successful is working together. We will be revisiting this again in Physical Education, and I look forward to working with and observing more and more groups working together so that each member can kick, head, knee and throw the ball with success. Ask your child to share with you what they learned from PE today.
In math, we did a quick review of adding 9 and adding 10 to numbers and then looked to see if their was a pattern or rule that we could use to help us be successful. Students recognized that knowing how to add 10 to a number helps them when adding 9. Students were proud to come up and share with the class what they did. We then discussed how if you know how to apply this thinking to adding 9 or 10 then we can apply it when adding larger numbers. For example, if students are given
9+8=
they can think
9+8= 9 is close to 10,it needs 1 more (from the 8) so
10+7=17,
so
9+8=17
we can then use this for larger numbers such as
39+8=
they can think
39 is close to 40, it needs 1 more (from the 8) so
40+7=47
so
39+8=37.
This was just one of the strategies the kids discussed today. There are many different ways, but it is important for the kids to recognize that there are many patterns in numbers and patterns in math, and that they build off what they already know to tackle something that they may not know how to at first.
We then worked on "How Many Ways?" where students got to choose from one of three different numbers and then decide and record this number in different ways. Students could use pictures, numbers or words to show their thinking. Ask your child to share with you the number they chose and some examples of what they did. The numbers they were able to choose from were:
38 120 259.
In writing, most students finished writing their essays about who their hero is. It was great to hear some students adding humour to the super powers and strengths of their heros!! Tomorrow we will have more time for students to read their writing to a partner and then share with the class if they want!
Important Information:
-FUN LUNCH forms are now going to be done online. A letter went home today, as well as in the Monday Morning Message that was emailed out by the school. This letter gives you instructions and an explanation on what you have to do in order to register. If you have any questions, please email me. Once you have registered and logged in, you will find that the first two fun lunches are up!!
